WSOP “November Nine” – Put Me Down For a ‘Nein,’ and Here’s Why

The World Series Of Poker: The Ultimate Poker Tournament is an occasion held every year at the Rio Suite Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. To a large portion of us, this is poker “nirvana,” particularly for those of us in the orange province gambling club party business. It’s an awesome game, one that we highlight unmistakably in our introduction book portfolios. Primary concern: We LOVE poker, in all structures 188xoso All things considered, perhaps not ALL structures.

Depend on it, we DO adore the game, and can hardly wait to join our card-playing brethren out in the desert, and go after the Rio when the WSOP gets going. BUT…. there is something in particular about the WSOP that has been irritating us for around two years now, and it’s an ideal opportunity to jump on the cleanser box and pontificate.

It has to do with the WSOP “Headliner,” the $10K purchase in competition that is considered by most as the “Big showdown” of the game. (Truly, I know, the subject of ‘is poker a game’ should be tended to. I’ll get to that, at some point later, I guarantee.) Back in the 1970’s, the point at which the World Series Of Poker was in it’s earliest stages, the competition just took two days to finish, presumably on the grounds that the complete number of passages in the competition 35 years prior normally finished out at around 50.

My, how circumstances are different.

In 2006, there were an amazing all out of 8,773 players vieing for what ended up being a $12 million dollar first prize. This year, during what some in Washington may call a ‘downturn,’ there were as yet 7,319 contestants into the WSOP Main Event at ten thousand bucks a pop. Take it from this gambling club night blogger: Without an uncertainty, poker’s “Reality Series” is staying put, and the Main Event, carnival like as it might be on occasion, IS for poker’s “reality title.”

What’s more, truth be told, THIS is the place I have an issue. I DO cherish the Main Event of the WSOP. I simply don’t care for it’s present FORMAT.

We should take a brisk look at the other “big showdown occasions” for some verifiable foundation, will we?

NBA – The NBA Playoffs started on April 17, 2010, and finished two months after the fact, on June 17, 2010. Through and through, two months. Two LOOONG months. Ask anybody that tracks the NBA post-season, and they’ll disclose to you that it delays until the end of time.

NHL – The NHL end of the season games went April 11/June 10. Two months, and it appears that THESE end of the season games delay longer than the NBA.

NFL – Basically a month and a half of end of the season games here, including the Super Bowl. Not very decrepit, time-wise. The NFL is additionally the lord of sports showcasing, so on the off chance that THEY state five weeks will complete it, that works for me.

MLB – Even not exactly the NFL. Shockingly, the MLB post-season keeps going pretty much one month (October 7/November 4, a year ago). (The season keeps going a half year, however. Possibly THAT’S the reason we’re worn out on baseball in November every year.

Well… OK…. In the event that my information is right (and it generally IS), the 4 significant games need from 1-to-2 months to decide their victor, and with regards to advertising the post-season, there’s no better business for the activity occurring than the games themselves, games that are on consistently.

Presently, how about we move to the World Series Of Poker. Presently, we first consider that the WSOP comprises of not one, yet in excess of 50 separate individual “arm band” competitions that began decisively on May 28th, 2010, and “finished” yesterday, July the eighteenth, in the Rio’s Amazon Room.

Or then again DID it?

Anyway, the WSOP takes about what, seven weeks from beginning to end? In any case, tsk-tsk, my orange area gambling club party companions, the WSOP season ISN’T finished. There’s only one little issue, and that is the thing that the WSOP calls “The November Nine,” the last nine players left at the WSOP Main Event Final Table.

Also, WHY do they call this gathering “The November Nine?” Easy. Since the WSOP, in their unending astuteness, is STOPPING the 2010 Main Event on Sunday, July eighteenth, and making the last nine contenders sit tight for a surprising 105 days until the competition is continued on November 1, 2010.

ONE HUNDRED AND FIVE DAYS.

Hell, anybody that messes around MY home realizes that on the off chance that we began a game on day 1, and held up 105 days until we FINISHED it, a large portion of the players wouldn’t recollect how to PLAY the game, not to mention play it well. In all actuality, these last nine players have a serious financial impetus to recollect how to play poker (First spot in the WSOP Main Event will get you over $8M), however that is unimportant.

WHY in HADES does the WSOP make these players sit tight for over a HUNDRED DAYS, before getting to the business of proclaiming a hero? Do they know something about advertising a significant season finisher arrangement that the four MAJOR games DON’T? I question it. This occasion used to be held at Binion’s gambling club downtown up through 2003, which, for the record, didn’t HAVE a poker room, when the WSOP started in 1970.

ESPN makes a fine showing of broadcasting the WSOP occasions, but it a broadcast plan that has gotten littler and littler since 2008. Primary concern, the WSOP doesn’t do one grisly thing to advance the last table of the WSOP headliner. They simply defer it unmercifully. As I would like to think, this fails to help the ‘sport.’ All this does is remove any energy from the players that were completely dialed in during the most recent hours of the competition, and cause them all to lounge around and get stale.

I HATE this. Hello, sue me, however I would prefer not to lounge around and hold on to see all the effectively recorded inclusion hours of the 2010 WSOP Main Event. I need to see them NOW.

In the event that the world could ever choose to bless me as “Poker Czar,” there’s two or three things that I would quickly change about the WSOP –

  1. Spread a greater amount of the other 50+ occasions that are held before in the WSOP. I adored watching inclusion of the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. occasion (5 sorts of poker played and turned like clockwork), just as the entirety of the individual $10K occasions that are held. Bring those back, spread them on a tape-postponed premise, however SHOW them to us after around 7-10 days pass.
  2. Spread the 2010 Main Event not surprisingly, yet don’t clutch the entirety of the recording that you’ve just SHOT, ESPN! SHOW IT TO US! It doesn’t take a very long time to post-produce the recording. Get to it.
  3. Alright, I understand that the most recent day of rivalry in the 2010 headliner took 17 hours to finish, to get down to 9 players from 27. No prob. Give the November Nine every WEEK off to recover, not 15 WEEKS! Hell, ANYTHING can occur in 15 weeks. Ruler help us if a player is harmed in some mishap, or more terrible, and the player(s) can’t return to complete the opposition. Give them multi week, at that point bring back the “July Nine” to discover who wins everything.

That is to say, please – All of the poker enthusiasts that follow the game with any perseverance at all and approach a PC or a phone KNEW who the November Nine were in ’09. There’s no motivation to defer this, WSOP. Help every one of us out, and make this the most recent year of this inept extended poker excursion. It’s superfluous, and it’s simply unacceptable.

Alright, I’ve given my opinion. Considerations?
